James Suckling Review
Rated 93
The smoky and herbal nose pulls you into this rather firm and muscular Pommard that reminds me of the wines from this appellation during the 1990s. However, all of this is wrapped in a cloak of black-cherry fruit. So much depth, but still slightly grainy at the finish. From a vineyard called Les Cras below the 1er Cru Rugiens. The first picking of the 2020 harvest, then 50% whole-cluster fermentation. Drinkable now, but best from 2024.

Maison Champy Pommard 2020

Maison Champy, established in 1720, is the oldest wine house in Burgundy, renowned for its commitment to quality and tradition. The 2020 Pommard is a testament to their expertise, offering a refined expression of Pinot Noir from the esteemed Pommard appellation.

Tasting Notes:

  • Appearance: Dark ruby with deep purple hues.
  • Aromas: Intense notes of blackcurrant, complemented by grilled aromas and a mineral undertone, giving the wine a fine, airy character.
  • Palate: Tight structure with crunchy fruit, showcasing good energy, freshness, richness, and a gourmet aspect.
  • Finish: Expansive aromatics with notes of black fruits, ripe fruits, and black cherries, reflecting the terroir of Pommard.

Additional Information:

  • Varietal Composition: 100% Pinot Noir
  • Appellation: Pommard, Côte de Beaune, Burgundy, France
  • Producer: Maison Champy

Vineyard Information: Located in the heart of the Côte de Beaune, between Beaune and Volnay, Pommard AOC has one of the best reputations in France. The village is situated on a slope, at 250 to 330 meters above sea level, with an easterly/south-easterly exposure. This appellation has 28 Premiers Crus, the most famous of which are “Epenots” and “Rugiens”.

The 2020 vintage is noted for its balance and expression of terroir, making it an excellent choice for those seeking a classic Burgundy Pinot Noir experience.
